![]() Check out my article on caffeine and arginine to see why preworkouts are dangerous. Taurine dosing appears to be effective at 1-3 g/day acutely across a span of 6-15 days (1-3 h before an activity) which may improve aerobic performance (TTE), anaerobic performance (strength, power), recovery (DOMS), and a decrease in metabolic markers (creatine kinase, lactate, inorganic phosphate). It’s much safer to drag the caffeine consumption out over a couple of hours rather than a couple minutes. I have some patients who think they are better off because they’re drinking a small espresso, but espressos pack a lot of caffeine and they’re consumed much faster than a large coffee. Some people can drink 3 Large cups each days and be completely fine, and others can’t even drink 1 small or they’ll start getting palpitations and anxiety. Taurine also helps the body process bile acid and balance fluids, salts and minerals, among other actions. Some people feel palpitations as a pounding in the chest or neck others feel them as a general sense of unease. They can also feel like the heart skips a beat. Palpitations can feel like the heart is fluttering, throbbing, flip-flopping, murmuring, or pounding. One example is that taurine is used for energy production. Different people experience heart palpitation symptoms in different ways. So that is why I take a magnesium supplement. The human body uses taurine for actions in cells. We can, and should, get our magnesium naturally (though vegetables, leafy greens, etc) but we rarely make it to our daily suggested allowance which is between 300-420mg depending on your age. Some of these factors are: 1) amount of caffeine consumed, 2) how quickly the caffeine was consumed, 3) if the caffeine was consumed on an empty stomach, 4) if the person is hypoglycemic, 5) the size of the person, 6) how well your liver metabolizes caffeine. Taurine occurs naturally in foods with protein, such as meat or fish. There are so many different factors with caffeine intake which determine how you’ll respond to it. Palpitations are usually the number one sign I use to tell if patients are consuming too much caffeine. Taurine is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that helps with digestion, energy production, immune response, neurological development, brain functioning, eyesight, nerve and muscle conduction.
